What is phase dressing and cutting?
Phase cutting is about a way of switching alternating current. With this switching method the load capacity of a lamp can be controlled with a dimmer.
Dimming phase cut-off
Dimmers with phase cut have the letters RC on the dimmer. These dimmers are suitable for incandescent lamps, 230 volt halogen, 12 volt halogen, dimmable LED lamps and dimmable energy saving lamps.
By dimming lights with the phase cut-off method you can save energy. With a dimming range of 100% you can completely dim the lamp until it is off.
Almost all dimmable light bulbs are dimmed on the basis of the cut-off principle. When you choose phase cutting, you choose the most energy efficient principle.
Dimming phase cut-off
Dimmers with phase cut have the letters RL on the dimmer. These dimmers are suitable for incandescent lamps, 230 volt halogen and some of these dimmers can also dim LED. However, this must be specifically stated on the dimmer.
A dimmer with phase cut has a dimming range of 40%. A lot less! With this way of dimming the light source will never be able to dim completely.
